Nyco thoughts
Dear nyco members, and whoever who wants to read this,
i gave some thought about some nyco issues, and i finally realise why nyco will never be like dhs.
nyco is too small. and has super duper limited funds unlike dhs. members are like inevitably indispensable.
and when they are indispensable, you can never motivate them to practice hard.
in their mind its like "so what if i dont practice? you cant get rid of me. without me, you'll have nobody!"
this is true, for a tiny winy orchestra.
in dhs, its like, 55members a level, 220members orchestra.
and selection for syf competition is about 80-100members. that means some members will not make it to syf.
and for us then, its rather embarrassing if others qualified to make it into the orchestra for syf, and you're not. yes others will think you're lousy, and cant perform like them. LOSER!
and this spurs people to prac hard so as to prove themself worthy to make it to syf squad.
as for nyco, its like...everyone's in no matter wad. if you're the only one that play sheng or zhong hu or bass, you're in, no matter how lousy you are. you're in. you HAVE TO be in.without you and your part, we'll all die.
and the happy member will be like "OH MUAHAHA I'M IN ALREADY, COME LETS PARTY FOR 3 MONTHS~ , i'll kick some ball on monday to wednesday, booze myself drunk for thursday to saturday, and bang some girl on sunday"
what about practice instrument?
"OH dont worry about it, i'm in the syf member list man! chill~ come have some booze, and i'll fetch you a girl."
they think they're good. while other schools who have big orchestra prac like mad. members desperate to qualify themselves in the syf list.
and yes, now to the financial side. although nyco receives "huge funding", its nothing compared to the 5 digit figure dhsco receives.
and the damm school is SOOOOOO goddamm cheapo, from god knows when BC until now, they refuse to buy a MUYU which is like...about $200 to $300 for an average black one.
much less replace the timpani or buy some marimba or other cool instruments. they wont even FIX the vibraphone, or buy some drumsticks. damm.
lazy members + sucky school management = forget about being up there, or receiving gold with honours.
they can psycho themselves, and repeat "gold with honours" 1million times a day, but if they dont do serious intensive prac, i assure you, unless other schools withdraw or get drunk on stage, there in no way nyco is gonna get the award.
i forget 1 thing. the instructors.
OH who the HELL are they?! yes they are in sco or wadeva, but, god, what the hell are they doing? with those lacklustre attitudes, slacking or wad, telling stories through the lesson, having 20min breaks and chitchatting with one another. besides ding lao shi teaching tby, i can safely say, the others are crap.
i cant motivate them to love music, much less have a passion for co. it just wont go into their mind. teens at this age have raging hormones which dont move with the music. what can i do? SHOPPING! MAPLE~! GIRLS BOYS~!
which one says CO~! ?
the couple of co enthusiasts cant make the whole tiny winy orchestra Apassionata music de chinese orchestra.
i came in with a big bang, didnt want to stay, but somehow stayed on, thought i can revolutionize the orchestra, only to fail to the management, teachers and attitude. i cant make use of 12 years co experience to make a mini orchestra a roup bursting with awesomeness.
nonetheless, i made my stint at nyco 2007-08. i have to admit, a few reasons made me bade it goodbye even before it officially ends. i still kept hopess high, until the end of the second intake of j1s. then all my hopes faded away.
oh zhiwen, good luck.
she's one person i'm confident that knows what good co music will be. and i'm sure her fellow members are supportive of her. er hum, may you make a huge impact on nyco. good luck la. you'll need that.
nonetheless, i thank i friends, fellow members, and teachers whom i have worked with, foster good ties, and created friendship, be it in music or off music. i thank you for the memories, be it good or bad. i'll forget the bad, and remember the good ones. i apologise for any mistakes i made along the way, be it music-wise or not. i apologise for failing to make nyco a roaring success, as my efforts are blocked by obstacles i never expect to encounted. may your pursue of good music never end.
